Challenge: Inefficient OCPP hinders experimental battery testing

Blue Current, a manufacturer of silicon elastic composite batteries for EVs and non-automotive devices, places strong emphasis on R&D to create thinner, lighter, and longer-lasting battery products. To support this mission, the company relies on robust Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) charging stations to test the performance and durability of experimental batteries under real-world conditions.

However, their existing charging stations faced several critical challenges:

  • Data transfer errors leading to data loss, delays and inaccuracies in charging records and billing
  • Inefficient reservation and state management, disrupting session bookings and real-time charger status
  • Generated false/persistent low voltage alerts
  • Lack of offline transaction support

To address these issues, Blue Current sought a modernized OCPP implementation and a new central management system. They turned to LARION to lead the full-cycle software development and deliver a future-ready solution

Solution: Custom OCPP System for Seamless EV Charging

LARION executed a complete software development lifecycle for the new OCPP solution using a Time & Materials (T&M) delivery model over five months. A dedicated team of five experts—including a Project Manager, Business Analyst, Technical Lead, Developer, and Quality Control specialist—followed the Waterfall methodology to ensure well-structured, milestone-based execution.

The solution was developed using C++ and WebSocket, and deployed on Linux and RTOS platforms to meet the needs of real-time performance. It supports IoT protocols and structures data in JSON, enabling reliable and standardized communication between the charging stations and the central system.

As a result of the engagement, LARION successfully modernized both the OCPP protocol and the central management system on schedule. The solution eliminated data transfer issues, ensuring smooth, consistent communication between stations and the backend system. Furthermore, it significantly enhanced the end-user experience by enabling accurate session reservations and transaction records. These improvements delivered a secure, seamless, and highly dependable charging process—empowering Blue Current to test and innovate with confidence.
